Northeast Community Fund Helping Families This Holiday Season

Decatur - Hunger doesn't have an off season, but it seems like more people are in dire need during the winter months.

That's where Decatur's Northeast Community Fund steps in to help.

"Over a five day span, last month, we did 768 families.  In a five day span.  The holidays, I think if there's ever a time that people might overextend themselves for their children or something, the holiday season is the time that might happen," said Northeast Community Fund director Jerry Pelz.

Pelz said that they're doing what they can to make sure Decatur families can put food on the table.

"Not only do we do regular baskets at this time, we also do additional food baskets," said Pelz.

In fact, community members can lend a helping hand this weekend when you go to do their Thanksgiving shopping.

They can grab something from the freezer or from the shelves, but either way, no donation is too small.

"You can't make the wrong choice.  Any type of food is acceptable.  We need cereal, both hot and cold, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, just a lot of basic things.  Soups in this colder weather also are excellent choices," Pelz added.

Pelz also said that another great way to help is to volunteer time and talents at the northeast community fund.
