You Can Help Fill Backpacks for the Needy for the Holidays

CHAMPAIGN - Daily Bread Soup Kitchen is once again planning to give hundreds of filled backpacks out for the holidays.  They give the backpacks to people in need, but they do need help from you to fill those backpacks and make it possible.

The backpacks will be given out December 18th.  Until then, donations are being accepted.  They need personal items for the men and women who will be receiving them.

Backpacks will be given to soup kitchen guests who are rarely remembered by anyone else with a gift for Christmas, the organization said.

Last year, 800 filled backpacks were given away.  The Daily Bread anticipates needing at least that many this year.

Here's how to help: Fill a new or nearly new backpack with such items as deodorant, hand lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, shaving cream and cold weather gear such as gloves, hats, scarves, socks, sweatshirts and long underwear. Other items to include could be candy, gum, a book, a deck of cards and a small fleece blanket.

Label the backpack with the gender and size (such as XL) for the recipient. Larger sizes are the most needed.

Drop off the backpack on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. starting Dec. 7 at Daily Bread Soup Kitchen, inside New Covenant Fellowship, at 124 W. White St., C, using the back door.

Daily Bread requests that you leave your name when you drop off backpacks, and said tax forms will be available at drop off sites.
