Local Organizations inviting residents to participate in Christmas Basket Drive

Posted: Updated:

DECATUR – Dove, Inc., and the Northeast Community Fund announce they are collecting donations and are in need of volunteers for their 2015 Christmas Basket Drive.

The organizations will be gathering donations of both food and cash to assemble food and gift baskets for area families in need.

Canned goods and other non-perishable food items can be delivered to the Northeast Community Fund by Tuesday, December 15. If residents plan to donate frozen hams, turkeys and fresh fruit, they must notify the Northeast Community Fund by December 14 to deliver on Wednesday, December 16.

New hats, gloves and mittens will be accepted for children and adults. New, un-wrapped toys are being collected for infants and youth up to the age of 18.

Wrapping supplies will be accepted at Dove, located at 302 South Union Street, prior to December 14. Donations to Dove should be made at the program level east entrance at the back of the building. These include rolls of tape, rolls and folded packages of wrapping paper. Any donations of gift wrapping materials made after December 14 will go to the First United Methodist Church, located at 201 West North Street.

Officials say they would like all donations for the baskets to be in by December 15.

Cash donations are accepted and will be used to purchase food and gifts for families in need. Checks should be made payable to either: “Northeast Community Fund” or “Dove Christmas Basket Drive.”

Aside from donations, residents can also help by adopting a family or volunteering to help organize and put the baskets together.

Families are adopted by providing and delivering a complete comparable Christmas Basket, including food and gifts for the entire family. Those interested in adopting a family should call Dove Community Services at 217-428-6616.

Volunteers are also needed to sort and count gifts on December 14, 15 and 16. Shoppers are needed to purchase gifts when donations do not meet the organizations’ needs. Volunteers can also show up to assemble baskets on December 17 and 18.

Baskets will be delivered on December 22.

More information is available by calling Angie Williams from Dove at 217-428-6616; or Jerry Pelz or Dave Hinkle from Northeast Community Fund at 217-429-5846.
