Longtime Family Business Processing Deer

Posted: Updated:

DECATUR – Heinkel's Packing Company in Decatur has processed 864 deer from hunters since October.

President Wes Heinkel says the plant started Deer processing in 1990 to serve a need in the area.

Heinkel's has deer drop off sites for customers in Vandalia and Effingham.

The fourth generation family business has operated since 1912 and at its North 22nd street location since 1945. The plant makes a wide variety of Venison products including sausage, bologna, slim sticks and more. The plant distributes product to 40 states and demand for its turkey legs has dramatically increased with shipments topping one million pounds this year.

You can find a behind the scene look at the plant in a business watch web exclusive located here.
