Arch Coal Files Bankruptcy


St. Louis-The parent company of a Logan County coal mine has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. 

Saint Louis-based Arch Coal owns the Viper Mine, near Elkhart, which employs about 300 workers.

            The company says its mines will stay open and employees should not be immediately affected by the bankruptcy process.

            The Viper Mine is the primary supplier of coal for Springfield's city, water, light, and power utility.
