DECATUR - The Decatur Fire Department is investigating a city bus fire that took place during the evening hours of February 12.

Officials say the bus caught fire shortly after 7:00 p.m. in the 500 block of Fairview Avenue.  Firefighters told WAND News the bus was engulfed in flames when crews arrived.

Luckily for the bus driver, Jackie Campbell just happened to be at the right place at the right time.  He tells WAND News, he was coming around the corner at the stop sign, heard what sounded like an explosion and saw the back of bus had heavy smoke and flames coming out.  He went up to the bus and helped the driver get out, before the whole thing went up in flames.  He says he grabbed the fire extinguisher but "It was in flames, I couldn't get it to stop!"

A salt truck had to head out to Fairview Avenue about 8:00 p.m., as water used to extinguish the flames froze on the roadway.

Decatur transit officials say the cause and origin of the fire are still under investigation, and that it appears the fire did not begin in the engine.  The fire caused an unknown amount of damage to the bus.

We will provide more information as it becomes available.
