FBI warns of phone scam

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD - The FBI is alerting you about another phone scam.

The latest scam targets people while displaying the FBI's telephone number on caller ID.

There are several versions of this scam. The caller begins by telling potential victims about delinquent student loans or dues, delinquent taxes, or overdue parking tickets. On occasion, the caller threatens arrest. The caller also requests immediate payment to avoid further punishment.

The FBI wants to remind you that agents never call private citizens to request money.

Individuals receiving such calls can file a complaint through the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.IC3.gov.
