House Democrats push for state holiday to honor President Obama

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD - A group of House Democrats is proposing President Obama's birthday become the next Illinois state holiday.

It's a distinction given to only a handful of U.S. Presidents, including: President Lincoln (Monday, February 13), and President Washington (Monday, February 20).

Former Governor Pat Quinn, along with 39 other governors, issued proclamations declaring February 6 Ronald Reagan Day, although it is not recognized as a state holiday.

Representative Andre Thapedi says President Obama's distinctions as a Nobel Peace Prize winner and first black president of the United States are reason to honor with a holiday. President Obama was born on August 4, 1961.
