Champaign Co. Businesses Become LEAP Certified

Posted: Updated:

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY – Employment opportunities for individuals with intellection / developmental disabilities in Champaign County are expanding thanks to Partners for Employment.

Partners for Employment is a collaborative effort between Developmental Services Center (DSC) and Community Choices to expand local employment opportunities for people living with disabilities. This is as a result of the Employment First Act, signed into law in 2013. The law states that competitive and integrated employment in the community shall be considered the first option when serving individuals with disabilities of work age.

This collaboration was launched in support of a state-wide effort to increase employment. Businesses who hire, or are interested in hiring someone with a disability, have the opportunity to become a LEAP (Leaders in Employing All People) Certified Employer.

Six area businesses have recently become LEAP certified. These businesses include: Rockwell Automation, Planet Fitness, Walgreen’s in Mahomet, Complete Electric, Loving Paws and MIGA Restaurant.

DSC officials say they are offering businesses the opportunity to receive this certification through the hiring, or interest in hiring, of people living with disabilities.

Businesses interested in becoming LEAP certified can contact Partners for Employment at 217-360-0033 or via email at pfe.by.leap@gmail.com.
