SPRINGFIELD - Crime Stoppers is reminding people to be extra vigilant on the road as weather improves. Spring is the time of year when people typically relax and fall into bad habits.Police respond to traffic crashes all year; however, the reasons behind the crashes tend to change as the weather changes.

Police say crashes involving distracted driving, especially texting while driving, increase during warmer weather.

Distracted driving includes:

  • Texting
  • Using a cell phone or smartphone
  • Eating and drinking
  • Talking to passengers
  • Grooming
  • Reading, including maps
  • Using a navigation system
  • Watching a video
  • Adjusting a radio, CD player, or MP3 player

Distracted driving affects all ages; however, drivers in their twenties make up 27% of the distracted drivers in deadly crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Although Crime Stoppers doesn't take tips about traffic and motorist activity, they are always looking for tips about ongoing criminal activity.
