Champaign authorities investigate damage, theft of wrought-iron fence at cemetery

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY - The Champaign County Sheriff's Office is seeking the public's help in its investigation into theft and criminal damage that happened at a local cemetery.

Deputies say this incident happened at Patton Cemetery in rural Champaign County between January 27, 2016 and January 30, 2016.  Authorities say the cemetery is surrounded by a 200-year-old wrought-iron fence, and that the fence was pushed or pulled down and 60-70 feet of the fence was stolen.

Police say the estimated cost of the damaged and stolen fence is between $15,000 and $20,000.  If you have any information regarding this incident, you are asked to call Champaign County Crime Stoppers at (217) 373-8477.
