Proposed Bill Looks to Raise Legal Smoking Age

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD – A proposed new bill, hoping to curb teen smoking, would raise the legal smoking age from 18 to 21.

Some lawmakers want to change the Tobacco Use and Distribution Act, which includes all forms of tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes.

MCHD Health Educator, Marisa Moomey, says, “"Even if you’re delaying for three years, maybe along that line we'll be able to help people, save a few people, give them the education they need, the tools and resources to maybe not even want to try that or develop that addiction."

A new law in Illinois already hands out fines and community service hours to anyone under 18, caught with an e-cigarette.
