Stalemate continues over budget

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD - The stalemate continues over the state's historic budget saga, with no end in sight.

Governor Bruce Rauner tried to spur lawmakers into action with his budget speech; however, the two sides remain far apart. Lawmakers are supposed to be focused on passing a budget for next year right now.

Governor Rauner gave lawmakers a choice in his budget address: Pass reforms outlined in his turnaround agenda in exchange for a $36 million budget, which would include raising taxes, or allow him to make $3.5 billion in spending cuts.

No negotiations have been publicly scheduled, and little is expected to happen before the March 15 primaries.
