Mattoon police make multiple arrests February 19 and 20

MATTOON - The Mattoon Police Department says they made five arrests in connection with various incidents on February 19 and 20.

Mattoon police say officers were dispatched to Walmart at about 6:36 p.m. on February 19 for a report of a theft.  Upon arriving, officers learned that two people allegedly attempted to take merchandise from the store.  Police say Mark Kaufman, 46, and Bobbi Diamond, 43, were arrested in connection with this incident.  Kaufman faces preliminary charges of theft and obstruction of justice, while Diamond faces a preliminary charge of theft.

Mattoon police also say Avin Waldrop, 30, and Brenda Freeman, 43, were arrested at the Mattoon Police Department at 11:02 p.m. the same night.  Authorities say both allegedly stole merchandise from Walmart.  Waldrop and Freeman face preliminary charges of retail theft.

On February 20, Mattoon police say Blake McWhorter, 26, was arrested at about 4:26 p.m. on a charge of failure to register as a sex offender.  Police say McWhorter allegedly failed to register a change in address as required by statute.
