Decatur – Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 99 in Decatur is the oldest active VFW post in Illinois.  The post could have a new home by the end of March.

VFW Post 99 has been located at 925 N. Water Street since the late 1940’s.  It’s an outdated building, with a leaky roof, located in a declining neighborhood.

The VFW is currently renovating what will be a new home just north of Mound Road behind a Thornton’s gas station.  The new facility will have a banquet facility, full service restaurant, bar, pool tables and video gaming.

The goal is to open by the end of March.  Volunteers and Painters District Council 58 have been working on the interior of the building but there could be a delay.

The building will need a fire sprinkler system to meet code before they open.  It’s an expense that was not anticipated.  The lowest bid so far is over $35,000.  The VFW is hoping for community donations to install the sprinkler system.
