Proposed Single Mother Law

SPRINGFIELD - A new bill could make it harder for single mothers to get help from the state.

Under the proposal, a mother would be required to put a father's name on a child's birth certificate.

If they do not name a father, the state could run DNA tests or require the mother to name a family member, to help financially.

Without a second name on the birth certificate, the mother would not be allowed to apply for state support.
