Fantasy Sports Experts Back Legislation to Legalize Fantasy Gaming in Illinois

Posted:

Springfield - Fantasy sports fans say it's just as exciting as the real games played by professional athletes.

One lawmaker is working to legalize fantasy sports in Illinois following a decision by Attorney General Lisa Madigan last year.

State representative Mike Zalewski (D-Riverside) said that if passed, the legislation would be the first of its kind for fantasy sports in America.

Industry professionals added that it will help ensure fantasy sports continue to grow in the state.

"Fantasy sports has over 50 million players in the United States and over 2 million here in Illinois.  I think if we all work together we can make this great hobby and have it continue to thrive in the state," said Peter Schoenke of the Fantasy Sports Trade Association.

Zalewski says he hopes to have the bill heard during the current spring session.
