A Big Win For Decatur Economic Development

Decatur – If economic development leaders in Decatur spike the football it is understandable.

Two months into 2016 and another major project is launched that retains and develops jobs.  Hotels, retail and now an expansion of a major production facility.

Akorn Inc. says it will expand its west side facility by 30,000 square feet.  It’s a $5.6 million investment for the pharmaceutical manufacturer.

“We actually beat out New York for this project,” said Patrick Hoban of the city of Decatur.  “So we really did win this.  This could have gone to New York.”

“We competed against the state of New York on this project.  So it’s a good win,” added Ryan McCrady of the Economic Development Corporation of Decatur & Macon County.  “The people in Decatur need to know that we do have competitive advantages and we use them whenever we can.”

The Akorn expansion will allow the company to retain 200 employees while adding 25 new positions.  Akorn has two facilities in Decatur employing 437.

Construction will start around April.  It will be completed late this year or in early 2017.
