Severe Weather Preparedness Week in Illinois starts this Sunday

Central Illinois: Severe Weather Preparedness Week runs Sunday, February 28 thru Saturday, March 5. This week is set aside to review your severe weather plan and to prepare for the upcoming severe weather season. 

According to Warning Coordination Meteorologist Chris Miller from the National Weather Service in Lincoln, Illinois ranks 5th in the nation for tornadoes per square mile. Last year Miller say Illinois had 69 reported tornadoes, hundreds of high wind and hail reports, and two major flood events. High impact severe weather events claimed the lives of 18 people while flooding killed 14 in Illinois. The statewide tornado drill is Tuesday, March 1 at 10 AM. The National Weather Service will issue a tornado warning for all 102 counties in the state with TEST wording in the text.
