Portion of Route 51 closed due to 2-vehicle crash Monday afternoon

MACON COUNTY - The Macon County Sheriff's Office says one person was injured in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Route 51 and Elwin Road on February 29.

Officials say the crash happened at about 3:00 p.m., and involved a 1995 Jeep SUV and 2001 Mitsubishi SUV.  According to the preliminary investigation into this crash, deputies say the Jeep was traveling northbound on Route 51, and that the Mitsubishi was stopped at the stop sign on the east side of the intersection.

Authorities say the driver of the Mitsubishi reported seeing the Jeep's right turn signal on, and thought that the Jeep would try to turn onto Elwin Road.  However, once the Mitsubishi was in the intersection, deputies say the Jeep continued to drive north, resulting in a collision.  Deputies also say witnesses reported seeing the right turn signal activated on the Jeep prior to the crash.

Authorities say the driver of the Jeep told deputies that he had stopped alongside Route 51 to make a phone call, and that he thought he had turned the signal off when he pulled back onto the roadway.

A female passenger of the Jeep was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries, and the driver of the Mitsubishi was cited for failure to yield the right of way at an intersection.  The roadway was temporarily closed while crews worked to clean the area, with all lanes being opened by 4:14 p.m.

This crash is still under investigation.  We will provide more information as it becomes available.
