Text-to-9-1-1 service now available in Champaign County

Posted:

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY - METCAD 9-1-1 of Champaign County has announced that residents now have a new way to contact authorities during emergencies.

METCAD officials say Champaign County residents can now use the new "Text to 9-1-1" service to get help during emergencies.  This new service aims to help people who are deaf or hard of hearing,  have a speech impairment, or who are in emergencies where talking out loud could put the person's life in danger.

In order to use this new service, type "911" in the "To" section of your text message, then type information regarding the location and nature of emergency in the body of the text.  Operators will have the ability to respond as well.

Officials are also reminding residents that they should call 9-1-1 for help whenever possible, and to use the texting option when you are not able to call.  For more information, click here.
