Bookkeeper Stole Thousands Of Taxpayers Dollars

Morris – A former Grundy County employee has pleaded guilty to stealing $42,000 in county funds to spend on personal shopping trips, meals at restaurants and visits to hair and nail salons.

Renae Chronister, 47, of Morris was immediately sentenced to 48 months of probation and 480 hours of community service.  She has also been ordered to pay $42,000 in restitution.

Chronister was a bookkeeper for the Grundy County Health Department.  The Illinois Attorney General says she pocketed cash as people came in to pay for services such as immunizations, mental health counseling and public health inspections.

An investigation showed a pattern of cash deposits being made to Chronister’s bank accounts from 2009 to 2013.  The money was then used for daily dining at restaurants and shopping trips to purchase clothing.

“The defendant was ordered to pay back taxpayers that she recklessly used to foot the bill for her lifestyle,” stated Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

The county detected money not being deposited consistently with the county treasurer’s office in 2012.  An audit was ordered which revealed the missing funds.

Chronister was fired in February 2013.
