URBANA -- A central Illinois man will be sentenced next month for torturing his girlfriend's cat, which later died.

Nathan Sitter, 24, of Savoy, pleaded guilty this week to one count of animal torture.

Investigators say Sitter choked the kitten and left it for dead. The cat was treated for multiple injuries, and later died.

Animal torture is considered a Class 3 felony; penalties range from probation to five years in prison.

Sentencing is scheduled for April 13.
