Lanphier coach Suspended for Regional Championship Game

SPRINGFIELD -- Lanphier head boys basketball coach Blake Turner will miss the Lions' regional final game Friday.

District 186 imposed a one-game suspension on Turner for an IHSA violation. He'll miss Friday's matchup against Jacksonville.

Tuesday, in Lanphier's 91-59 regional semifinal win over Springfield, the Lions suited - and played - 16 players, 1 more than allowed during the postseason by IHSA rules.

The rules states: "In each of the tournament games, a participating school shall not have more than fifteen (15) eligible participants in uniform. This includes the warm-up for each game and at half-time."

Lanphier self-reported the violation. Friday, IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson released the following statement: "Recognizing that coaches are responsible for knowing and abiding by IHSA rules in its report, Lanphier recommended a one-game suspension for head coach Blake Turner to occur in the Regional final scheduled to be played on March 4. I was in agreement that the extra participation had no impact on the outcome of the contest and accepted their recommended penalty of a one-game suspension.”

The Lions and Crimsons tip off at 7pm on Friday.
