MORGAN COUNTY – The Illinois State Police of District 9 report they responded to a fatal traffic crash involving an officer on Illinois Route 267 just before 9 PM on Friday, March 4.

Authorities say the crash happened a mile north of Nortonville Road on Illinois Route 267 in Morgan County. According to the preliminary traffic crash investigation, a fully marked South Jacksonville Police unit was traveling south on Route 267 responding to an emergency medical call. A Lifestar ambulance was following behind the officer’s vehicle responding to the same call.

When the units could not locate the subject of the call, the officer pulled to the right shoulder of the road. He then initiated a U-turn in the path of the ambulance. This caused the ambulance to hit the police vehicle on the driver’s side.

Troopers say 32-year-old Office Scot Fitzgerald sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. All three occupants of the ambulance sustained minor injuries.

All those involved were initially transported to the Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville by one of the following: Winchester Ambulance, South Jacksonville Ambulance or Murrayville Ambulance. Fitzgerald was later transported to Memorial Hospital in Springfield.
