Smith Rd. apartment fire causes $65K in building damages

URBANA – The Urbana Fire Department reports units responded to a kitchen fire on South Smith Road at around 3:30 PM on Saturday, March 5.

Fire personnel arrived on scene at 1008 South Smith Road to find heavy smoke coming from one of the apartment units. Firefighters determined the fire was contained to one apartment. Three occupants were in the apartment at the time of the fire.

A female resident in an adjoining apartment had to be transported to Carle Hospital for smoke inhalation. At this time, personnel do not have an update on the status of that resident. Another resident, a wheelchair bound male, was rescued from a balcony across from the burning apartment.

No residents or personnel were injured during the containment of the fire.

Urbana Fire officials report that an estimated $65,000 in damages were done to the building, and $30,000 was done to the contents of the apartment. As a result, the apartment has been deemed uninhabitable.

All occupants of the affected apartment and its adjoining apartments have been relocated as clean-up is underway.

The Champaign-Urbana Emergency Services Support Team, Red Cross, Urbana Police and MTD were also assisting on the scene of this fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
