Friends, Community Remember Fallen Police Officer in South Jacksonville

South Jacksonville - The crash happened on a stretch of Highway 267 just south of Jacksonville.

The crash involved officer Scot Fitzgerald's squad car, and an ambulance, both apparently on the way to help someone.

That's something friends said was what Fitzgerald loved to do.

"Huge heart.  He was a true public servant for not only our community, but for all of the communities he has touched," said Phil McCarty, director for the Morgan County Emergency Management.

In a town wherever everyone knows everyone, McCarty said his death came as a shock.

"When you have a small community and lose any member of the community, but a community member that was responding to an emergency, it's a significant event.  That's the most important part for us right now is to make sure that only our officers, but our community can heal from this tragic loss," he added.

From the village leaders, words of condolence for the family of Officer Fitzgerald.

"Through Officer Fitzgerald's devotion to his family and passion for public service, we will continue to find strength, but for now, we all bleed blue for Officer Fitzgerald and his family," Pat Staples said.

For his family, donations can be made to benefit his two children, 4 year-old Colton and 4-month old Fynlee, at the 1st National Bank of Murrayville.

Officer Fitzgerald will be laid to rest Wednesday morning.
