Report: Nickerson, McGee Set to Take Illinois Coordinator Positions

CHAMPAIGN -- Lovie Smith's efforts to fill his coaching staff at Illinois appear to be well on their way.

According to multiple reports, Smith reached agreements with a couple of assistants to fill his offensive and defensive coordinator positions.

ESPN's Adam Rittenberg is reporting Smith has already hired Louisville offensive coordinator Garrick McGee as OC and quarterbacks coach.

McGee was head coach at UAB from 2012-2013, but has spent that last two seasons in Louisville.

Sports Illustrated's Pete Thamel says his sources confirmed Hardy Nickerson, the 49ers linebacker coach, will take the defensive coordinator position. Nickerson is a five-time NFL pro bowler.

In addition to the names reported to be on Smith's radar Tuesday (which you can read about here), reports Tim Spencer is in the running for the runningbacks coach job. Initially reported as a done deal, Spencer is still weighing his options, according to contributor Chris Vannini.

Spencer was Smith's RBs coach in Chicago from 2004-2012, and followed Smith in the same position in Tampa in 2014 and 2015.
