Budget Mess Slam Dunks Saluki Basketball

Carbondale – The state budget crisis is now having an impact on college sports programs in the state including the Southern Illinois University men’s basketball program.

SIU coach Barry Hinson announced his 22-10 team would not participate in postseason play in part because of a concern over the “health and welfare” of his players.  But in large part due to “….the budgetary implications of hosting games on our campus during spring break.”

The Salukis were expected to be picked to play in the NIT.  They are eligible to play in any one of 5 postseason tournaments.

SIU President Randy Dunn is expected to tell lawmakers on Thursday in Springfield that as many as 180 jobs will be lost on the Carbondale campus under Governor Rauner’s proposed budget plan.
