Illinois lawmaker introduces bill to toughen penalties on synthetic drugs

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD - An Illinois State Representative has introduced legislation that would increase penalties for individuals in possession of synthetic drugs.

Under the proposal, sponsored by State Representative Avery Bourne (R-Raymond), the penalty for being in possession of any amounts of cathinone and/or synthetic cathinone substances, also known as bath salts, would be raised from a Class 4 felony to a Class X felony.

Bourne says the legislation aims to address the synthetic drug problem in her district, as well as the state of Illinois.  For more information, call (217) 324-5200.
