A Mild and Wet Meteorological Winter in Central Illinois

Posted:

Central Illinois- Meteorological Winter (December, January and February) will go down as one of the top 10 warmest winters on record for many sites. The biggest contributor was well above average temperatures during the month of December. January and February were above normal, but only by a couple of degrees. This is very constant with what can be expected with a strong El Nino, like what we have had this past winter.

The National Weather Service in Lincoln says precipitation values ended up well above average in many location; especially south of I-72, where many sites have a 3" to 6" surplus of moisture. Flooding rains in December where the biggest reason for the above average numbers for the winter months. Precipitation totals exceeded the seasonal forecasts from earlier in the year.

Snowfall amounts ended up below normal. Many location in central Illinois saw between 10" to 15" of snow running 5" to 10" below normal for the season.

Here is a list of stations and how the meteorological winter stacks up. For more information you can find the complete article at http://www.weather.gov/ilx/winter_Sum. Peoria, Springfield and Urbana are the only stations considered "official".
