EIU to lay off 177 employees

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON - Eastern Illinois University officials say more than 170 employees will be laid off on March 12.

In an email, EIU President David Glassman said 177 employees will be laid off due to a lack of funds, which is being caused by the state budget impasse.  Glassman also says the positions that will be temporarily eliminated will by ones that are "critical to the vitality and operations" of the university.

Glassman adds that once a state budget is in place and the university receives funding, employees affected by the layoff will be called back to work.

We will provide more information as it becomes available.
