Millikin’s Williams Moves on to All-American Round at NCAA Wrestling Championships
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA -- Millikin freshman Chris Williams earned All-American status after advancing to the final eight at the 2016 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships on March 11 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Williams stayed alive in the consolation round with a thrilling last second 6-4 win over Ryan Wilson of the Stevens Institute of Technology. Williams scored the final takedown in the match’s final second.
On Friday morning, Williams won his first match in the 141 pound weight class defeating Aaron Wilson of Augsburg 9-6. The match was tied at 6-6, but Williams used a takedown and a point for riding time to pull out the victory.
Williams, the seven seed, lost his quarterfinal match to the two seed Jimmy Nehls (30-4) of Elmhurst College 7-3 setting up his advance or go home match with Wilson.
Williams will wrestle on Saturday morning against Scott Giblin of Rhode Island College.
In the morning session in the 285 pound weight class, Millikin’s James Buss lost to Tyler Maher of the Stevens Institute of Technology 5-1. Maher scored four points in final 10 seconds of the match to pull off the win. Buss suffered an ankle injury in the match and was unable to continue in the NCAA Tournament. Buss was forced to Medically Forfeit his Consolidation Round match.
