Springfield Student Wins First in State Poetry Contest
SPRINGFIELD- Friday evening, the Springfield Area Arts Association held the state Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest at Hoogland Center for the Arts.
Southeast High School's Gwendolyn Brooks and her piece, "The Children of the Poor" won first for Illinois' qualifying competition for the national Poetry Out Loud Competition that will be hosted in Washington D.C. in May.
Amber Price, East Maine High School was named runner up.
This year Illinois' Poetry Out Loud contest, had 45 high schools compete, 110 teachers and 3,673 students from across the state.
