Decatur police increasing patrols to combat drunk driving

Posted: Updated:

DECATUR - The Decatur Police Department has announced it will join law enforcement agencies from across Illinois in increasing their watch for impaired drivers on St. Patrick's Day.

Decatur police say there will be an increase in patrols designed to catch drunk drivers this week, as part of the nationwide "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign.  Decatur Police Sergeant Chris Peters is urging residents to not drink and drive, and to not let their friends do so, either.

"Before celebrating St. Patrick's Day this year, decide whether you'll drink or you'll drive.  If you choose to drink, designate a sober, reliable driver to get you home safely from the party," said Peters.

Authorities are also reminding sober drivers to look out for impaired pedestrians, who may not obey street signs, and may wander into traffic.
