SPRINGFIELD -- A delay for a tornado warning didn't slow down the Belleville-Althoff Catholic Crusaders, who ended Southeast's postseason run on Tuesday night.
The Crusaders got 17 points from junior Jordan Goodwin - one of five in double-figures - as they took down the Spartans 83-69 in the 3A super sectional. Althoff Catholic will play Lincoln-Way West on Friday in the state semifinals.
Limited to just 22 points at halftime, Southeast got the game back within ten early in the third quarter, but a balanced Crusader attack, which at one point included 8-of-11 shooting from 3-point range, proved too much.
By the time Althoff's lead reached 20, the only drama that remained was a tornado warning, issued with less than a minute to go in the third quarter. Sirens blared across downtown Springfield, forcing the couple thousand in attendance to take shelter in the Prairie Capital Convention Center's basement.
The delay lasted about a half hour, and fans returned to their seats to watch the Crusaders cruise the final nine minutes of the game.
De'Angelo Hughes and Trevyon Williams each had 17 points to lead Southeast. It was the Spartans' first super sectional appearance since 1980.
