U of I Board of Trustees approves construction contract for new student union

Posted: Updated:

URBANA - The creation of a student union at the University of Illinois - Springfield is one step closer to reality, as the university's Board of Trustees has approved a construction contract for the project.

The $12.7 million contract was awarded to William Brothers Construction, Inc. on Wednesday.  The new student union is planned to be a two-story, 50,000-square-foot facility.

The student union project and design was approved by the Board of Trustees in January 2014, which allowed for university officials to raise $8 million in private donations for the construction of the union.  The remaining cost will be covered by a construction fee approved by students and campus funds.

Construction is expected to begin in May 2016.
