NEW YORK -- Illinois Wrestlers had a good opening round at the NCAA National Tournament at Madison Square Garden.
Five of the six in attendance moved on to the round of 16 Thursday afternoon. Among them, top-seeded 157 lb. wrestler Isaiah Martinez, who earned a win against North Carolina's Robert Henderson by technical fall in the 2nd period.
Other seeded Illini moving on include Zane Richards (3rd in 133 lb.), Steven Rodrigues (6th in 165 lb.), and Zach Brunson (5th in 174 lb.). Illinois heavyweight Brooks Black pulled off one of the bigger upsets of the day in New York, with a 6-2 decision over 6th-seeded Denzel Dejournette out of Appalachian State.
The lone loss for Illinois came in the 184 lb class, as Jeffrey Koepke fell to Domenic Abounader, the 4th seed out of the University of Michigan.
