Defending national champion Isaiah Martinez cruised in his first two matches Thursday, winning by a combined score of 31-4, including a 15-4 major decision in the round of 16 of 16th-seed Markus Scheidel out of Columbia.

Martinez will face Virginia Tech's Nick Brascetta in the quarterfinals.

In addition to Martinez, Zane Richards (3rd seed in 133), Steven Rodrigues (6th seed in 174), and Brooks Black (unseeded in 285) all won their round of 16 matches. They'll also compete in Friday's quarters.

The lone Illinois loss in the late session went to 174-pound 5-seed Zach Brunson, who was upset by 12th-seeded Nathan Jackson of Indiana.
