Decatur – The WAND News I-TEAM recently noticed a trend. Arrests in central Illinois connected to prostitution and the website backpage.com.
While law enforcement works the local angle of this site Congress is tackling it on a national level. Illinois Senator Mark Kirk calling it the number one sex trafficking website in the nation.
“It’s no surprise they are hiding their role in selling children online for sex,” the Republican lawmaker stated. “I have repeatedly called on the Justice Department to investigate Backpage.”
So far the Justice Department has not taken action on the website.
Congressman Rodney Davis, (R) Illinois, says one teen who testified at a hearing he held had been branded like cattle when she was forced into the sex trade.
“As she sat next to me I saw a number tattooed on her ear,” Davis told I-TEAM reporter Doug Wolfe. “Her human trafficker branded her with that number. And I will never again see a number like that on someone, on a human, and not ask them if they need help.”
Senator Kirk has repeatedly tried to get action from the Attorney General without success. Letters from Kirk calling on her to investigate backpage.com were sent in August 2015, October 2015 and February 2016.
