Flood Safety Awareness Week

Flood Safety Awareness Week runs March 13th thru 19th! Nearly everyday flooding happens in the United States or it's territories. Flooding can cause more damage then any other weather event at times. On average, flooding causes 8 billion dollars in damage. Here are some step to think about when looking at flooding preparedness....

  • Knowing your risk
    • Do you live near a dam or river?
    • Do you live in a flood plain? 
  • Preparing for a Flood
    • If flooding rains are possible prepare your house. Removing items or move valuables out of your basement or raise items off the floor.
    • Do you have the correct insurance? 
  • When Flooding Threatens
    • Do you know where to get the information from? 
    • National Weather Service will issue flood warnings/advisories and watches
  • During A Flood
    • Even six inches of fast moving floodwater can knock you off your feet, and a depth of 
        two feet will float your car! Never try to walk, swim or drive through such swift water.
    • When encountering flooded roadways Turn Around Don't Drown! 
    • Keep children from playing in floodwaters or near culverts and storm drains.
  • After A Flood
    • Make sure to boil water 
    • If food has come into contact with flood water through it out! 
    • Don't handle electrical equipment while standing in water!
