Champaign apartment fire causes over $40K in estimated damages

CHAMPAIGN – Champaign fire personnel were on the scene of an apartment fire on East John Street just before noon on Friday, March 18.

Crews arrived on scene to find smoke coming from an apartment at 57 East John Street at around 11:56 AM. They began suppressing the fire immediately and managed to extinguish the flames quickly. Fire officials report that the fire was out by 12:04 PM, with no firefighter or civilians injuries reported.

Twelve pieces of Fire, Rescue and EMS equipment and 26 emergency response personnel respond to the call. The Champaign Police Department was also on scene providing traffic control.

An investigation is currently underway to determine the origin and cause of the fire. Total damage is estimated at $37,500 to the structure and $3,000 to contents within the apartment.

The Champaign Fire Department reminds all citizens to maintain a working smoke alarm in their place of residence and to have and practice a home escape plan.
