INDIANA – The Indiana State Police report two law enforcement officers were wounded when gunfire was exchanged during a warrant service early Sunday (March 20) morning.

Howard County Sheriff Steve Rogers announced one of the men, 27-year-old Deputy Carl A. Koontz, had died as a result of the gunshots injuries he sustained in the exchange. 35-year-old Howard County Sheriff Sergeant Jordan J. Buckley was also shot, but he has since been listed as in stable condition.

Deputy Koontz, a three year veteran of the Howard County Sheriff Department, along with Buckley and officers from the Kokomo Police Department, were attempting to serve a search warrant at 390 Chandler Street in Russiaville, southwest of Kokomo, Indiana at 12:30 AM on Sunday.

Sheriff Rogers says officers were looking for an individual with an outstanding arrest warrant. When the officers knocked on the door of the Chandler Street residence, there was no answer. They entered the residence when the occupant began firing shots, the officers then returned gunfire.

Koontz and Buckley were wounded during the exchange. They were taken from the residence and provided first aid then transported to Howard Regional Hospital, stabilized and airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Deputies then secured the residence and removed adjacent neighbors. Howard County SWAT, Kokomo Police SWAT and Indiana State Police SWAT responded to the scene and attempted to contact the occupant of the residence.

Those attempts began at 2:30 AM, and they received no response. They continued to attempt communication for two hours before they were able to confirm an individual was dead inside the home. That person’s identity has not been confirmed yet.

At 1:20 PM on Sunday, a motorcade took the body of Deputy Koontz from Methodist Hospital to the Marion County Coroner’s Office.

This incident is currently under investigation by Indiana State Police. They say while it is still in the early stages, crime scene investigators and detectives are working to determine the dynamics of this incident.
