Second Family Dollar store robbed in growing string of robberies

SPRINGFIELD – The Springfield Police Department reports another dollar store has been the victim of an aggravated robbery as authorities track a suspect who they believe has been responsible for other recent robberies as well.

Springfield officers responded to a hold-up alarm at the Family Dollar store in the 1400 block of East Cook Street at 9:53 AM on Sunday, March 20. Upon arrival, authorities learned a black male suspect approached the clerk and demanded money. After receiving the money, the suspect exited the store and headed east.

Witnesses say a weapon was implied but not shown at the time of the robbery. The suspect is described as a black male, standing at 6’00’’ with a thin build, light beard and black zip-up coat with red, orange and yellow stripes on the sleeves.

The suspect’s pictures have been attached as authorities are urging the public to call the law enforcement if they recognize the suspect.

Detectives investigating the case are looking into the likelihood that the suspect in this case is the same suspect that has recently robbed numerous stores in Springfield and Sangamon County. These robberies include another Family Dollar on Wednesday, March 16, as well as a string of Dollar General robberies.

Springfield authorities say the suspect has worn some distinct clothing during robberies that may stand out and may assist in the suspect’s apprehension.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Springfield Police at 217-788-8311 or Crime Stoppers at 217-788-8427.
