Posted: Updated:

DECATUR – Companies like Decatur Based Archer Daniels Midland Company look to future opportunities with Cuba.

In November 2001, ADM was among four companies to sign trade accords with Cuba following Hurricane Michelle. ADM, Cargill, Riceland Foods, and ConAgra provided food supplies worth 20 million dollars to the Island. Among the commodities were wheat, corn, soy and rice.

In September 2002, ADM became the first U.S. company to sign contracts with Cuban food importer Alimport worth $9 million at a U.S agriculture trade show in Havana.

The U.S. – Cuba Trade and Economic Council expects President Obama's historic visit to the communist country to open the door for more opportunities but not immediately.
