Decatur City Council could discuss expansion to current fiber network

Posted: Updated:

DECATUR - Decatur officials say City Council members could formally consider an expansion to the city's existing high-speed fiber network next month.

Under the proposed plan, the high-speed network could potentially be used by schools, healthcare facilities, distribution facilities, manufacturers, and other fiber providers.  Additionally, the City would lease some of its fiber to companies that would serve as the Internet Service Provider to other users.

If approved, the fiber network would also be connected at Richland Community College.

Decatur City Council members could formally approve the plan as soon as the scheduled meeting on April 4.  The estimated cost of this project is about $700,000.

We will provide more information as it becomes available.
