Lottery Ticket Sales Proposal Would Help Illinois Shelters

SPRINGFIELD----Specialty scratch-off lottery ticket sales could help Illinois homeless shelters struggling to operate without state help during the budget crisis.

The Illinois legislature has a pending measure that would create a new $3.00 scratch ticket. All the proceeds would be designated to help homeless shelters.

The proposal is one measure some lawmakers are attempting to find a method to sustain funding for one of the many programs that can no longer operate fully without state support.

State officials say homelessness affects about 38,000 people in Illinois.
