New bird banding station to open at LLCC

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD - Lincoln Land Community College officials say a new facility is being opened to house the college's bird banding research program.

The new 36'-by-24' building was built by LLCC construction trades students, and funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation.  LLCC biology students, in cooperation with the Lincoln Land Association of Bird Banders, will be able to capture, band, and release birds, as well as record and add information to a massive data pool on bird migration patterns.

Officials also say a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new facility was recently held.  LLCC Biology Professor Tony Rothering says the new bird banding station "provides students with a practical scientific experience outside of the classroom."
