Red Cross seeking type O negative blood donations

Posted: Updated:

PEORIA - The American Red Cross is encouraging citizens with type O negative blood to make a donation for patients in need.

Red Cross officials say they are encouraging eligible donors to make a whole blood or double red cell donation, as type O negative blood can be transfused to patients with any blood type and is often used in emergency situations.

Red Cross Blood Services Communications Director Nick Gehrig says type O negative donations are "necessary in emergency situations when there is no time to determine a patient's blood type," and that donors are needed to donate often "because there is such a high demand for type O negative blood."
