MATTOON - The Mattoon Fire Department says crews responded to a report of a fire at an apartment building during the evening hours of March 23.

Officials say firefighters were dispatched to the Sunrise Apartments in Mattoon at about 10:11 p.m. for a report of a structure fire.  Upon arriving, firefighters say they saw fire and smoke coming from the northwest corner of building D on the third floor.

Fire officials say most of the fire was found in the Northwest bedroom, and that the fire caused heavy damage to the apartment.  Crews quickly worked to extinguish the flames, with all units clearing the scene at about 12:15 a.m.

Two apartments were rendered uninhabitable due to the fire.  Red Cross volunteers assisted affected individuals in finding a place to stay.

Fire officials say one person was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in this incident.  The Mattoon Fire Department says the cause of the fire was a child playing with matches.

We will provide more information as it becomes available.
